A wonderful day was had by all at Windsor Castle as many amazing people received their honours from Her Majesty The Queen. Penny Snell, our former Chairman and current London County Organiser was appointed Commander of the British Empire at the investiture ceremony on December 2nd.
“This was such a very special day for my family and me, and we were so thrilled it was Her Majesty herself giving the awards” Penny said, following the ceremony.
Penny has been County Organiser for the National Gardens Scheme since 1980. She served as a Trustee from 1985-1995 and as Chairman of the Trustees from 2008-2014 and in 2014 she was appointed a Vice President. When she stood down as Chairman in 2014 her contribution was recognized by the Royal Horticultural Society who awarded her the Veitch Memorial Medal.
Penny’s citation for her CBE said, ‘her enthusiasm and commitment are indefatigable and inspiring.’ It continued, ‘[Her] remarkable charisma and drive over many years have transformed the NGS. It is now an award winning charity recognised nationally for its unrivalled funding of healthcare charities as well as its contribution to tourism and gardens.’
