More about Macpennys Woodland Garden & Nurseries

MacPennys Woodland Gardens originate from worked out gravel pits and are therefore on many different levels. The indigenous trees have been allowed to mature offering shelter and some shade to the many precious plants underneath. First planted in the 1950s the gardens are continually evolving, with some essential manual help along the way but consequently are a little on the wild side which adds to the magic, encouraging a host of birds and insects. There is hardly a day in the year when birdsong is not heard. The soil is naturally lime free, therefore ideal for growing camellias, magnolias, rhododendrons, azaleas, all flowering in succession from January - June and Japanese acers to name just a few. Most colourful during spring and again in autumn, there is always something to spark interest all yr-round. The Woodland Gardens offer a 'Living Catalogue' to the attached nursery where many of the plants seen growing in the gardens are propagated and grown on to be offered for sale to the visiting public. Awarded a large gold and best in class for our display stand at The New Forest Show (July 2016).
