Hill House Farm

Knighton

5 acre south facing garden developed over 50 years, set in magnificent hilly countryside. Some herbaceous and extensive lawns around the house. Mown paths lead through shrubs, roses and specimen trees down to the half acre Oak Pool 200ft below. There are 11 sculptures and as many sitting places scattered around this very peaceful garden. Good range of snack bars and biscuits. Suggested contributions into an honesty box.

There are very few straight edges in this garden and only one level lawn - the old tennis court now used as an imperfect croquet lawn. All the paths through the shrubbery and among the trees are curved so that as you walk you are continually being presented with a different vista. The Oak Pool - created by damming a small stream in 1976 - at the bottom of the garden benefits from the five magnificent 200 plus year old oak trees which you see as you walk on the paths that go right round it. The house stands at just over 1000 feet above sea level and the very bottom of the garden is 750, making growing fruit a hazardous pursuit but the soil, overlying red sandstone is reasonably fertile and shrubs and trees grow well. Only one other dwelling is visible at a distance of half a mile - from part of the garden.
Not an ideal garden to visit on a windy day and only limited access for wheel chairs.
