12 Fairfield Road

Hornsey

This peaceful and secluded garden has been created on two levels with year-round interest and is packed with a variety of trees, shrubs and flowers, as well as succulents, palms and bamboos. There is a woodland garden with sculptures, a cobbled Zen garden and a raised pond - made by a Vietnamese family - which creates different atmospheres whilst seating provides places to contemplate and enjoy.

When I moved to the ground floor flat of this Victorian house some 11 years ago, the neglected garden was in need of a major overhaul. I was lucky enough to meet a final year student from Capel Manor Horticultural College who wanted the experience of designing and building his first garden. Since then it has changed many times to reflect my growing interest in gardening. The planting is soft and wide-ranging with differing heights, textures and colours. Sculptures and statues add drama. The raised pond is one of the focal points and was bought from a not-for-profit company who support small businesses in Africa and Asia. The garden has become an important part of my life following my Parkinson's diagnosis. It allows me to continue to be creative whilst working at a pace I can manage and also provides a tranquil harbour in stormy times! This year I have been lucky enough to have my garden included in a video film for Parkinson's to thank NGS for their support.
