That Bloomin' Green Triangle

Liverpool

The Bloomin' Green Triangle started as guerrilla gardening in the front gardens of boarded up homes in Beaconsfield, Cairns, Jermyn and Ducie streets in Toxteth. Residents took action in protest at the emptying of their streets by the city council. They planted a Wild Flower Meadow on ⅓ acre of derelict land in Ducie St. Guided tours at 1pm and 3pm.

That Bloomin' Green Triangle is an example of People Power in the heart of Liverpool. In protest at the city council's policy of buying up the Victorian houses and letting them fall derelict, local people decided to beautify the streets themselves. The self improvements started in Cairns Street and quickly spread to nearby Beaconsfield, Jermyn and Ducie Streets, as residents painted the boarded up frontages, and started planting in the front gardens.
The Beaconsfield and Cairns St homes have been restored, with a programme of mixed ownership and affordable housing and residents have a strong voice in the improvement programme.
And the emphasis throughout is on the green environment, with residents given hanging baskets and planters at the front, and making the most of their back yards for planting too.
Guided tours start at the Ducie St Wild Flower Meadow, which attracts many butterflies and bees in this inner city environment, at 1pm and 3pm.
