    An outstanding example of a Repton-designed garden on the banks of the River Tamar. The gardens include a formal border, a picturesque Dell with pleasure dairy and rockery plus an Arboretum.

    The formal gardens have a long herbaceous border with a croquet lawn and a unique Shell House, a 100m rose arch and yew walk.

    The Dell includes the original pleasure dairy where the Duchess made butter for fun. The stream is lined with huge gunnera and bamboos collected for the Duke.

    The Arboretum was originally planted by the 7th Duke of Bedford and today includes some wonderful specimen trees and feature in the Champion Book of Trees.

    Some parts of the garden include many steps and inclines and may not be suitable for the less sure-footed.

Features and Attractions

Hotel was built in 1810 by Sir Jeffry Wyattville for the 6th Duchess of Bedford in the romantic cottage Orne style. Plant Nursery adjoins hotel's 108 acres.
