Horatio's Garden

Salisbury

Award winning hospital garden which opened in Sept 2012 and was designed by Cleve West for patients with spinal cord injury at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre. Built from donations given in memory of Horatio Chapple who was a volunteer at the centre in his school holidays. Low limestone walls, which represent the form of the spine, divide densely planted beds and double as seating. Everything in the garden has been designed to benefit patients during their long stays in hospital. Garden is run by Head Gardener and team of volunteers.

    Horatio's Garden is an independent charity which creates beautiful gardens at spinal injury centres in the UK. There are currently three gardens open in Salisbury, Scotland, and Stoke Mandeville, with the fourth Horatio’s Garden at Oswestry due to open later in 2019.
    The charity are also fundraising for their Capital Appeal to create a Horatio’s Garden in London at Stanmore.The charity organises all sorts of creative and therapeutic activities for patients to enjoy in the gardens.
    The gardens are sanctuaries for patients to share with their families and friends – and the hospital staff too.
    Volunteers are vital to the gardens. The charity trains them to support the patients and everybody benefits from the experience.

Features and Attractions

At 3pm there will be a talk about therapeutic gardens by Charity Chair Dr Olivia Chapple & Head Gardener, Stephen Hackett. 3 Society of Garden Designers Awards 2015 and Bali Award 2014. Cleve West has 8 RHS gold medals, incl Best in Show at Chelsea Flower Show in 2011 and 2012.
