Coxbench Hall

Derby

Formerly the ancestral home of the Meynell family, the gardens reflect the Georgian house standing in 4½ acres of grounds most of which is accessible and wheelchair friendly. The garden has 2 fishponds connected by a stream, a sensory garden for the sight impaired, a short woodland walk through shrubbery, rockery, raised vegetable beds, an orchard and seasonal displays in the mainly lawned areas.

The Ancient Yew Tree Group has classified the old Yew tree in the grounds as 'veteran' which estimates it age between 500 and 800 years old.
The 1875 survey for the 1881 Ordinance Survey Map of the site shows a potting shed near the ha-ha boundary. The woodwork of that potting shed has been replaced, in the same style as previously, on top of the existing brickwork and the fire pit and flue along the floor for heating in the cooler months has also been retained to preserve the authenticity. A relaxing addition has been, a bench on the front of the building which provides panoramic views of the garden.
There is also an aviary, several patio areas and benches along the paths to sit, relax and enjoy the gardens.

Features and Attractions

As a Residential Home for the Elderly, our Gardens are developed to inspire our residents from a number of sensory perspectives - different colours, textures and fragrances of plants, growing vegetables next to the C18 potting shed. There is also a veteran (500 - 800 yr old) Yew tree.
