41 Mill Hill Road

London

120ft x 40ft garden. A surprisingly large and sunny garden, with lavender and hornbeam hedges, herbaceous planting and climbers, incl unusual and rare plants as the owner is a compulsive plantaholic. Good in July and August, with many salvias, clematis, dahlias and late flowering hardy and half hardy annuals.

Adjoining the house is a sunny terrace with scented wall shrubs, lilies, oleander and a collection of pelargoniums. This leads to a paved area with raised vegetable beds, sheds with a living roof and a greenhouse with tomatoes, cucumbers and chillies. A hornbeam hedge separates this area from a rectangular lawn with a 50 foot mixed herbaceous border including climbing roses and clematis; on the other side there is a lavender hedge bordering a path with a narrower spring border running along the right hand side of the garden. At the far end, there is a raised and paved area with box topiary and a rose arbour, and behind that the compost heaps and some more beds. There are many unusual herbaceous perennials, and an increasing number of fantastic salvias which enjoy the particularly light, dry soil we have in this area. Most of the annuals and some of the perennials are grown from seed or cuttings by the owner.

The garden won first prize in Ealing in Bloom, Best Improved Garden, 2011.
