5 Burbage Road

Herne Hill

Dramatic changes have taken place this winter in the garden at 5 Burbage Road, London SE24. After spending much time, effort and money trying to save the box from the damage caused by blight and the box tree caterpillar it was decided to take it all out and think about replacements to create the same sort of strong structure that the box had provided. After looking at various possibilities in a display at Wisley it was decided to use Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Beach ball’ to replace the box balls across the middle of the garden and beyond, and to use Sarcococca confusa (winter box) to replace the hedge along the terrace. The easy-going Euonymus japonicus ‘White spire’ has been planted in shady parts of the garden. It was sad to have to remove the box as it had all been planted as little cuttings many years ago. However, regarding it as an opportunity, the resulting planting is successful. The Pittosporum is a lighter green than the box and looser in form, and the hedge has the advantage of the lovely winter box scent. Daphnes and the vanilla-scented Azara microphylla also waft beguilingly around the garden. In March there are lots of spring things to see here: species tulips (T.sylvestris, T. Turkestanica), rare old varieties of narcissus ( ‘White Lady’, ‘ Elegance’), pulmonarias, blue and white periwinkles, various primulas, little treasures in pots and pans, and the sculptural shapes of the pruned roses.
