Cottage Row

nr Blandford Forum

Maturing ½ acre partly walled garden. Formal and informal areas separated by yew hedges. Pergola, arbours, brick paths, tree house, kitchen garden and the sound of water; bees and butterflies abound in this tranquil spot. This sophisticated cottage garden reflects the owners' love of unusual plants, structure and an artist's eye for sympathetic colour.

On the edge of the village of Tarrant Gunville, next to massive aged beech trees is a long brick wall smothered with roses and clematis. Behind the old wooden door lies a secret garden. The half acre garden, designed and created by Carolyn Pawson over the last 12 years, reflects her artistic background, the importance of structure and unusual plants, and her particular love of clematis, one of which is named after her.

There are fine examples of bulbs, wisteria, cyclamen and roses, two of which cascade from 70-80 feet. In high summer the eryngiums and an unusual form of lavender come alive with bumble bees; witness to the chemical free husbandry. Box and yew give form and winter interest, and the sound of water provides a background for silent reflection. There is a small kitchen garden with new raised beds bordered by a hedge of trained fruit trees.
