Gardens of Derbyshire
19 – 22 May 11 – 14 August 2016
The limestone crags and verdant hills of the Peak District in Derbyshire provide the splendidly scenic backdrop for this stimulating tour of gardens, both large and small.
It starts among the faded grandeur of Calke Abbey, which tells the story of the dramatic decline of a country house estate. We continue to two great houses which have happily survived the test of time – the Elizabethan masterpiece of Hardwick Hall, whose walled courtyards enclose fine gardens, and Haddon Hall, which has a superb garden that spills down towards a river from one terrace to another.
A day spent touring the magnificent countryside of the High Peaks is punctuated with visits to two charming and intimate private gardens, Craigside and Gamesely Fold, and we conclude at the award-winning gardens of Trentham, which boast contributions from luminaries such as Piet Oudolf and ‘Capability’ Brown.
• The faded glory of Calke Abbey
• The history-heavy halls of Haddon and Hardwick
• The green fields and limestone crags of the High Peaks
• Trentham Hall’s gardening superstars

Gardens of the Lake District & the Borderlands
10 – 15 June 7 – 12 August 2016
As well as being an area of outstanding natural beauty, the Lake District has some stunning gardens. Not to be outdone, the neighbouring regions of Northumberland and the Scottish Borders have some equally fine gardens to offer, making for a stimulating two-centre tour.
Among the highlights in the Lakes are Holehird Gardens, ten acres of vibrant planting within an outstanding landscape; Rydal Hall, an Italianate garden with fantastic views, and Windy Hall, which has NCCPG collections of Filipendula and Aruncus. In Northumberland we visit the innovative and still-evolving Alnwick Garden and make a cross-border raid to the private gardens of Anton’s Hill and Carolside. Also featured are Levens Hall, famous for its amazing topiary; Dalemain, an extensive garden set around a mediaeval, Tudor and early Georgian house, the private country house gardens of Loughbrow and Whalton Manor and finally Crook Hall, which takes inspiration from the magnificent Durham skyline of Castle and Cathedral.
