To commemorate 50 years of opening for The National Gardens Scheme a tree planting ceremony took place at Marwood Hill Gardens, Barnstaple on 17th October.

The creator of the wonderful garden was Dr. James Smart who moved to Marwood in 1949 and the garden has been expanding ever since. His nephew Dr. Snowdon inherited the garden in 2002 and it has continued developing under the guidance of Head Gardener Malcolm Pharoah.
The tree chosen to commemorate the anniversary was a Tree Fern, Dicksonia antartica, which grows at high altitude in Tasmania, so will be hardy in this country. The Dicksonia was planted in the sheltered ‘Antarctic’ corner, which is already home to a couple of tree ferns and a Nothofagus antartica.
In 2010 the gardens will be open in aid of the NGS on Saturday15 May and 14 August.
