Whatever your plans for the weekend, we have an open garden in Hertfordshire to suit your schedule.
For its inaugural NGS opening, 22A The Avenue in Hitchin plays host to an evening event on Friday 29th July. This 8-year-old contemporary town garden has been gradually designed and implemented by the owners who first embarked on the patio and pond area and developed the garden onwards from there.
Deep borders of flowering perennials in hot and vibrant colours, many sourced from local nurseries, are backed by Piet Oudolf inspired grasses, with modern landscaping providing structure and defining spaces. Relax after a busy week with a glass of wine amid the purple hues of Agastache Black Adder and Salvia Smouldering Torches.
On Saturday visit a truly interesting small town garden - 9 Tannsfield Drive. The 50ft x 25ft plot has been imaginatively laid out and creatively planted. Narrow paths give the visitor many options of how to discover the garden. A good variety of grasses, ferns, clematis, fuchsias, honeysuckles and ornamental trees feature in densely planted flower beds. Shade and gravel planting along with a mini orchard and water features can also be seen
And to round off the weekend take a stroll around town garden 35 Digswell Road. Here you can find Piet Oudolf-inspired naturalistic borders with herbaceous plants and grasses surround the lawn. Beyond are island beds packed with perennials, linked by grass paths. The contemporary planting gives way to the exotic, including succulent bed and lush jungle garden with bamboos, bananas and tree ferns.
