Special Open Day - The Royal Garden at Frogmore House, Windsor

Come and enjoy a rare opportunity to visit the private royal garden at Frogmore House, on the Crown Estate at Windsor. The beautiful landscaped garden, with notable trees and 18th-century lake, will be open by kind permission of Her Majesty The Queen in aid of The National Gardens Scheme on Tuesday 15th May 2012 from 10.00am until 5.15pm. Entry is £5.50 on the day (cash only), with last entry at 4.00pm. Refreshments are provided or you are welcome to bring a picnic.

Tours of the garden led by the Head Gardener, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, can be booked for £3 per person (limited availability).

 
Queen Victoria was inspired to write 'all is peace and quiet and you only hear the hum of the bees, the singing of the birds'. Indeed Queen Victoria loved Frogmore so much that she chose to build a mausoleum for herself and her husband, Prince Albert, in the grounds. Unfortunately due to long term renovation work this is not currently open to the public.

You can also purchase a separate ticket on the day to visit Frogmore House (£6, some concessions). The interior of Frogmore House reflects the interests and talents of several generations of the royal family and the garden is one of the enduring attractions of Frogmore. Queen Charlotte had a great interest in botany and was given full rein in the garden at Frogmore, which she laid out with rare and unusual plants.  She formed an extensive botanical library and flowers became a major theme in the house. She commissioned Mary Moser (1744-1819), a renowned flower painter, to decorate a room with garlands of flowers. The original library is now known as the Britannia Room , displaying many items from the Royal Yacht.
