Money

The NGS is a registered charity
which opens gardens of quality, character and interest to the public

Most of the 3000 plus gardens which open for us are privately owned. Over 500,000 people visit our gardens each year, but too few of them appreciate that through this we raise over £2 million for national nursing, caring and gardening charities.

Since 1927 we have raised almost £40 million to support these charities, £22 million in the last 10 years.  We keep overheads low, so most of the money from the garden gate goes straight to our beneficiary charities.

Our donations are “unrestricted” which means our money can be invested in areas which the beneficiaries consider vital to future development, and which might be difficult to fund from other sources.

Examples of where our donations go include:

  • Macmillan Cancer Support: £10 million donated over 30 years to fund cancer nurses
  • Marie Curie Cancer Care: £500,000 annually helps people make the choice to die at home
  • Help the Hospices: our regular donation helps train nursing staff providing palliative care
  • Crossroads: a major donation helps them support carers and their families
  • We keep up our tradition of funding nursing care through the Queens Nursing Institute and we help retired horticultural workers through Perennial.

Each year we give money to the National Trust to fund training in gardening skills, aimed at people who would not otherwise have the chance to train.
