Macmillan Cancer Support
£10 million raised
In 2005 we are celebrating 20 years of support for Macmillan Cancer Support. To commemorate this partnership, The NGS and Macmillan hosted a garden lunch at the Chelsea Physic Garden in London in mid September. The afternoon was an opportunity to acknowledge The National Gardens Scheme ongoing support for Macmillan and for garden owners and supporters to meet several of the nurses. All the garden owners present have opened their gard ens continuously since 1984 – the first year that the ‘Yellow Book’ listed Macmillan as a beneficiary charity – and several had opened for many years prior to 1984. From their hard work, the first cheque was presented to Macmillan in the spring of 1985.
Samantha Bond, star of many films, including several James Bond ‘s, and a longstanding Macmillan supporter, told everyone what a fantastic achievement it was to have raised £10 million and funded 123 Macmillan Nurse posts over the last 20 years.
The afternoon was rounded off with tours of the wonderful Chelsea Physic Garden, a truly appropriate setting for such an event. Founded by the Society of Apothecaries in 1673 in order to promote the study of botany in relation to medicine, then known as the "physic" or healing arts, it is the second oldest botanic garden in England and still fulfils the traditional functions of scientific research and plant conservation and undertakes to educate and inform as well as to provide the amenity of a walled "secret" garden in the heart of London.
