South West
The gardens of the South-West counties of England come into their own early in the season, with many coastal gardens which benefit from the influence of the Gulf Stream and the mild maritime climate. Many of the plant hunters of the nineteenth century have left a great legacy of flowering plants here, and there are many renowned gardens to visit. This is on the whole a wetter and warmer part of the country, where many exotic plants flourish, but at the same time there are moorland stretches such as Dartmoor and Exmoor, where gardening can be more of a challenge. In general soils are acid, with exceptions (in parts of Dorset for example), but with a long growing season there is much to see and do throughout the year. From early daffodils and camellias in March to Autumn colour in October the South-West is indeed a gardener's paradise.
