7 Shires
The range of scenery gives rise to a great variety of gardens. North Cotswolds has honey-coloured limestone buildings with picture book villages while south Cotswolds is grey stone and a past industrial history of old mills but a charm all of its own. There are a number of large traditional gardens on big estates with lots of roses and clematis, especially in the north, but also many smaller, personal places with 'plantaholic' owners. Soil is basically alkaline and free-draining but the densley wooded Forest of Dean is quite different, with rhododendrons growing on acid soil overlying the rock. Here too it is a milder climate with many early spring gardens, while up on the hills there can be a bitter wind in winter and often frost pockets. Fantastic views from the hills across the vale of the river Severn into Wales. Winding country lanes bring you to places of unexpected beauty.
