FROGMORE HOUSE GARDEN OPENS WITH
THE NATIONAL GARDENS SCHEME - TUESDAY 26 MAY
The beautifully landscaped Frogmore House Garden, set in the magnificent private Home Park of Windsor Castle, will be opening its gates to the public to raise money for charity with the NGS on Tuesday 26 May.
A favourite royal retreat for over 300 years, Frogmore was originally purchased for George III's consort, Queen Charlotte and has since been enjoyed as a tranquil country residence of successive monarchs. It is still frequently used by the royal family for private social events, but is no longer an occupied royal residence.
The 30 acres of garden and 18th-century lake were largely the creation of Queen Charlotte, who had a passionate interest in botany. Over 4,000 trees and shrubs were introduced to create a model 'picturesque' landscape, which in the last century was restored by Queen Mary and enhanced for Her Majesty The Queen's Silver Jubilee, and in 2006 a Tulip Tree (or Liriodendron) was planted to commemorate 60 years of opening with the NGS. The historic plantings, including tulip trees and redwoods, provide a rich setting for the garden's seasonal variations. In summer, the 18th-century Gothic Ruin, used by Queen Victoria as a breakfast and reading room, is clothed in wisteria.
Frogmore is now particularly associated with Queen Victoria who was inspired to write 'all is peace and quiet and you only hear the hum of the bees, the singing of the birds'.
The charming gothic Tea House and white-marble Indian Kiosk were installed in the grounds during her reign. Queen Victoria's great affection for Frogmore contributed to her decision to break with royal tradition and build a mausoleum in the garden for herself and her husband, Prince Albert (currently closed because of restoration work).
Garden visitors are welcome to picnic in the gardens or visit the catering and refreshments marquee. There is also a Royal Estate Shop selling small souvenirs.
