Further details:This half-acre country garden on a gently sloping site has developed over seven years from a grassed-over farmyard with 40 foot high hedges into a billowing riot of colour. The central feature of this country garden is an eighteenth century horse pond which has been reinstated and the steep bank behind terraced with sandstone blocks to support mixed herbaceous planting punctuated by clematis columns.
The yellow garden has a sinuous path leading through it from the kitchen garden to the rugosa rose allee, which terminates at a judas tree, beyond which are the scree bed and raised alpine beds. On the other side of the allee is the pink garden, full of peonies and penstemons, bordered by a trellis of clematis and cream roses, which shelters a quiet corner of the garden within which are the wildlife pond and "wild meadow".
Beside the drive is a long bed where the shrubs include a strawberry tree, pheasant berry and tree peony, under-planted with cranesbill and wild strawberry. This bed continues across the front of the garden where some unusual shrubs and a pride of india tree are underplanted with blue flowers. A clematis- and rose-covered pergola leads to the arbour, from which can be seen the white garden, the grass bed and the hellebore bank. A long flight of steps leads down to the house, between the horsepond and a bed planted with cool, grading to hot colours.
The gentle sound of a water feature draws attention to the shady hosta corner, beyond which is the "hot spot", filled with vibrant summer planting and tender exotics.
