Description:Winchelsea is a beautiful medieval town founded in 1288 by Edward I. For nearly 200 years, as a Cinque Port, it was a major trading centre. Now all that remains of that time are the medieval merchants' cellars and the old streets, built on a grid system, behind whose old walls are the Secret Gardens. Two gardens return to the list for the June opening and we add two exciting new ones. 7 gardens also open in September; a new departure for us
Guided tours of medieval cellars both dates at 10.30am, £5, booking essential, 01797 229525 (mornings) or cellars@winchelsea.com. Beautiful church of St Thomas open to visitors. Town information at www.winchelsea.net and www.winchelsea.com

Disability information:Wheelchair access to most gardens; see map for details
