Further details:DUNSTER CASTLE GARDENS Very little records were kept of the gardens until the National Trust was given the property by Colonel Walter Luttrell in 1976. We do know however, that the Mill garden and most of the main features in the garden were designed by Mrs.Alys Luttrell during the 1920's. After much devastation during the late 1970's and early 80's, the Keep was reorganiased with the main theme Myrtles and Pittisporum, paths were constructed around the perimeter to allow visitors views out over Minehead and the Bristol channel to the south east and Dunkery Beacon to the west. The bamboo that proliferated throughout the Mill Garden was eradicated and Symphitum Uplandicum and S. Hidcote blue was substituted as ground cover. The seventeen acres of gardens and twenty seven acres of parkland were catalogued at that time, also over eight hundred species were recorded, including Wellingtonia many Rhododendron cv's Azaleas, Magnolia. Camellias & Philadelphus to name just a few
